Cook County 2025 Property Tax Exemptions Now Open: What Homeowners Need to Know

Homeowners in Cook County can now file for their 2025 property tax exemptions, which help reduce the amount owed on upcoming tax bills. These exemptions are one of the most effective ways for homeowners to lower their annual property tax burden.

Several exemptions are available depending on eligibility, but the most common is the Homeowner Exemption. To qualify, you must own the property (or have a lease/contract making you responsible for the taxes) and occupy it as your primary residence on January 1, 2025. According to the Cook County Assessor’s Office, the Homeowner Exemption saves the average homeowner about $950 per year.

Senior Exemption Deadlines Approaching

Senior Exemptions

Senior citizens who are newly eligible for a senior citizen property tax exemption or who are eligible for the income-based Senior Freeze Exemption, have until April 10th to apply, under a recently extended deadline.

Under a new law passed last year, senior citizens who have already qualified for the standard senior citizen exemption in past years do not have to reapply. The exemption is now automatically renewed.

Applicants for the Senior Freeze Exemption however, are required to apply each year. Cook County homeowners age 65 or older who have household incomes of $65,000 or less may qualify. This senior freeze exemption provides additional property tax deductions to offset increases in assessed property values.
